Many companies offer residential mold removal services. How can you pick the right one? How can you be sure that the job is done properly and that the price charged for the service will be fair? Here are some things to look out for when choosing a mold remediation company.
What services do residential mold removal companies offer?
While it will vary from one company to the next, Consumer Affairs says that mold remediation companies offer various services.
- Consultation – Experts evaluate the damage caused by mold and offer advice to homeowners on how to address it. They can help homeowners determine the source of excessive moisture that caused mold growth and offer advice on preventing it from happening again. Consumer Affairs reports that some professionals offer free consultations while others charge for them.
- Mold testing is done by professionals who test the air and examine surfaces to determine if there is mold. The results of the laboratory tests are presented to homeowners. They might also conduct post-remediation tests, which test the home for mold after remediation is complete. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends post-remediation.
- Mold removal and remediation of mold-related damages – Experts can remove mold from different surfaces in your home, replace or remove moldy materials, fix mold-related problems, and remedy the issues that caused the mold to grow. While mold removal companies can handle most of the work, you might need an HVAC specialist to address any mold problems in your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. After remediation, if mold is found in your home, professionals must guarantee their work.
As this could lead to conflicts of interest, we recommend that you do not hire the same company for mold remediation and postremediation testing. To ensure that the job was done correctly, you need an impartial party to perform the post-remediation test.
How do you know if a residential mold removal company is qualified to do the job?
Most states don’t require mold removal professionals to be licensed. There are however, industry organizations that can certify professionals in this field. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you inquire about the qualifications of your employees when choosing a mold removal business. Ask about their qualifications if they have been certified by an industry-specific organization. What were they required to do to be certified? Are they required to continue their education to keep their certification?
These are just a few mold removal credentials that professional organizations offer. However, these credentials are not all that mold removal professionals might have. Some professionals may be certified by multiple professional organizations. To verify credentials of a professional, you can contact the certifying organisation. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t certify mold removal professionals.
