Australia is blessed with great beaches, a mild climate and a sunny summer. This lifestyle naturally transfers into our homes. With the popularity of coastal decor in people’s houses, and summer looming, it’s never been more important to refresh and revitalize your home. Here are our top five tips for creating the beach house look at home, even if your home is not on the coast.
1. Incorporate natural materials in your living room
Coastal living involves natural and woven materials, neutral colors and light-filled spaces. You can achieve a coastal, boho look in your home by using eco-friendly, sustainable materials like rattan or wicker. These textures can be incorporated seamlessly into the space and used to make a variety of furniture, such as pendant lights, dining chairs, planters, and cabinetry. You should also add natural foliage to your room (though we won’t tell anyone if they buy fake plants). To create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
2. In the dining room, keep it casual
When renovating or remodeling your home, it is important to remember to be casual. Do not feel restricted by style rules. This is especially true for dining rooms. It’s a formal focal point of your home and the place where you host guests.
To keep the space casual and comfortable, you can use laid-back options like minimalist dining chairs, unusual materials like rope (see our Rope Chandelier above), or artwork to assert your personality.
3. Revitalise your bedroom
We forget to consider seasonality when decorating our bedrooms. Instead of sticking to dark colors and winter tones, you can inject some coastal style into your bedroom by using sheer white curtains, wicker pendants or wall lights, and pure linen bedding.
Instead of choosing a boring, uninspiring bedside desk, you might consider a reimagined stump bedside table. You’ll achieve that beach house/coastal look quickly if you make sure the room has plenty of natural light.
4. Your bathroom can be your oasis
Bathrooms are often seen as a boring space that serves a single purpose. We disagree. You can easily transform bathrooms into living spaces that bring the outdoors into your home.
For a coastal-inspired bathroom, you might consider installing a rainshower head, louvered windows that let in natural light, and eco-friendly pendant lighting like our Rattan Pendant Light (above).
5. Enjoy long summer evenings outdoors
Festoon lighting is something you have probably seen before. But, if this is the first time you are considering giving it a try, we recommend it! Festoon lighting can be a great way to create a welcoming atmosphere in your outdoor living space. It’s also perfect for parties, birthdays, and weddings. Festoon lights can be sprinkled around your backyard to create a relaxing atmosphere that will make summer nights memorable.
