It’s all about what you do. The colours you choose, the furniture you love, and the accents you use give your space a unique look you have been searching for. Decorating also involves the things you don’t do, or more often than you think. A person with an editorial eye will always look for something that can be discarded, whether too big or too small. If you don’t exercise your editorial eye enough, you will find yourself making the same mistakes over and over again in every room you enter. It’s a good thing because it can be just as helpful to know what you shouldn’t do as knowing what to do. These are some things you should look out for when taking stock of your decor. You’ll be amazed at how many you see them, even in professionally designed rooms.
Do not choose a small area rug.
Is your area rug too small? One of the most common decorating errors is using a too-small carpet. All furniture should be placed on the rug. If this is not possible, the front legs for more solid pieces can be placed on the rug. The back two of the furniture need not be. The rug should have all four legs for smaller pieces.
Do not choose the paint colour first.
Never pick the paint colour last. Paint comes in thousands of colours that can be easily changed. First, choose the most expensive items and then decorate around them.
Hang the chandelier not too high
Hanging chandeliers too high is problematic. The ceiling should be lit. You limit the light spread by attaching chandeliers too high. Your room will look darker if you define the light space.
Don’t Hang Artwork Too High.
Art is often hung closer to the ceiling than it should. It is best to hang artwork at eye level. This will vary from one person to another, so use your judgement. It’s better to be lower than higher.
Do not choose drapes or curtains that are too short.
Drapes and curtains should be able to skim the ground. They can be longer or puddle slightly but should not be any shorter. Curtains too fast can have the same effect on the wall as pants too short. They make it look more concise and truncated.
Avoid using too many throw pillows.
Although throw pillows can be a great decorative accent, you shouldn’t have too many to make it difficult for you to get on the couch, chair or bed. It doesn’t matter if it looks great in a shop, but it doesn’t mean it should look the same in your home.
Avoid using tiny accent pillows.
It would help match the furniture pieces you have chosen with your throw pillows. A small pad placed on an oversized chair will look sloppy and unfinished.
Do not create a theme room.
Although they are fun to decorate, many people get bored of them quickly. They quickly become outdated and no longer relevant. You’ll end up spending more on items you don’t need. Instead, you can add elements to your room that reflect the theme you love. You might add a few animal prints to your room, such as zebra print pillows or an ottoman if you love jungle themes.
Do not choose style over comfort.
Many of the most beautiful items on the market are stunning and very uncomfortable to use. Before buying a piece of furniture, think about how you will use it.
Do not push all your furniture against the walls.
This can be difficult due to the small space. To create intimate conversations, pull furniture away from walls. This is especially important for family rooms. Although some people may be reluctant to reveal the backs of furniture pieces once they are finished, it is perfectly acceptable.
Overhead Lighting is not enough.
Although overhead Lighting can be helpful, it is not sufficient to provide enough illumination and isn’t particularly flattering. It is better to have both ambient and task lighting. You can use table lamps, floor lamps and sconces, or any combination of them. Use a mixture of both floor and table lamps. This will give you more light and make your room look bigger.
